Why Your AC Keeps Turning On and Off (Short Cycling)

Short cycling sounds like this. You hear the AC kick on. Three minutes later it shuts off. Two minutes after that it kicks back on. The house is not getting comfortable, the humidity is high, and your electric bill is creeping up.

This is one of the most damaging things an AC can do to itself. The starting current on a compressor is way higher than the running current. Every short cycle is wear and tear on the most expensive part of the system. Address it fast.

Normal AC cycle vs short cycling
A healthy residential AC runs 15 to 20 minutes per cycle. Anything under 8 minutes is short cycling.

AC clicking on and off all day?

Stop running it. Every short cycle is wear on the compressor. We will diagnose it today.

What is in this article

What "short cycling" actually is

A normal cooling cycle, when your AC kicks on, should run somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes. Long enough to actually pull heat and humidity out of the house. Short cycling is anything noticeably less than that. We see calls where the unit runs three minutes and shuts off, then starts again four minutes later. That is bad.

1. The unit is oversized for the house

This is the most overlooked cause and it is something we see all the time on installs done by other shops. A contractor came in, did not run a proper load calculation, and put in a four ton system on a house that needed three. The result: the system over-cools fast, satisfies the thermostat, shuts off. Repeat all day.

Oversized units also do a lousy job of pulling humidity. They cool the air fast but never run long enough to dehumidify, so the house feels clammy.

Fix: not a fun answer, but the right answer is replacement with the correct size when the time comes. We always run a Manual J load calculation if necessary, before we quote a system. More on how we install.

2. Dirty air filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow across the indoor coil. The coil gets too cold, which can trigger a freeze sensor or cause the system to short cycle on its safety controls. Sometimes you will also notice the coil itself iced over.

Fix: change the filter. If you cannot remember the last time you did, today is a good day. Then run the system for an hour and see if it cycles normally.

3. Low refrigerant

Low charge can trip the low pressure safety, which shuts the compressor off. Pressure rebuilds, system kicks back on, runs a minute, trips again. Classic short cycling.

You also might see ice on the copper line outside, hear hissing at the indoor coil, or notice your bill jumping while the cooling is weak.

Fix: tech only. Find the leak, repair it if reasonable, recharge to spec. Topping off without finding the leak is a waste of money.

4. Failing capacitor

The capacitor gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor the kick they need to start. A weak capacitor can cause the compressor to stall on startup, trip on overload, then try again a couple minutes later when the overload resets.

Symptom: clicking sound at the outdoor unit, hum without start, fan barely turning. Capacitors are cheap and quick to replace. Common failure on the coast in summer heat.

5. Bad thermostat or thermostat location

If the thermostat is in a bad location (over a supply vent, in direct sun, near a kitchen) it senses changes in temperature that are not representative of the rest of the house. Cold air hits it, it shuts the AC off. Hot draft hits it, kicks back on.

Or the thermostat itself is failing. Old mercury thermostats are mostly gone, but a flaky digital can absolutely cause short cycling.

Fix: relocate or replace. We do thermostat work as part of a regular service call.

6. Frozen indoor coil

A frozen coil can cause the system to kick off on a freeze sensor, then come back on once it thaws a little, then freeze and trip again. Look for ice on the indoor coil or the copper line. Most often caused by the dirty filter or low refrigerant we already covered.

Frequently asked questions

What is AC short cycling?

Short cycling is when your AC turns on, runs less than 8 minutes, shuts off, and starts again sooner than it should. A healthy cooling cycle is 15 to 20 minutes. Anything under 5 minutes is severe short cycling and you should turn the system off until a tech looks at it.

Is short cycling damaging my AC?

Yes. The compressor draws huge starting current. Every short cycle is wear on the most expensive part of the system. The start components fail sooner. Dehumidification suffers. Your electric bill climbs.

How long can my AC short cycle before it breaks?

It depends on the cause. A capacitor that is short cycling can die within days. A refrigerant problem can kill the compressor in a few weeks of heavy summer use. Do not "wait it out."

How much does it cost to fix a short cycling AC?

If the cause is a capacitor or filter, $0 to $400. Refrigerant repair runs $450 to $1,800. If the unit was installed oversized for the house, replacement is the only real fix.

Why does my AC turn on and off every 2 minutes?

Severe short cycling at 2 to 3 minutes is usually a low pressure switch tripping (low refrigerant) or a freeze sensor tripping (airflow problem). Turn it off and call a tech. Running it like that wrecks the compressor.

Can a thermostat cause short cycling?

Yes. A thermostat in direct sun, over a vent, or near a kitchen reads false temperatures and cycles the system constantly. A failing thermostat can also do it. About 11% of our short-cycle calls are thermostat related.

Is my AC oversized?

If your unit cools fast but never pulls humidity, runs for 5 to 10 minutes and shuts off, and the house feels clammy, you are likely oversized. We do a Manual J load calculation if necessary, on every install we quote so this does not happen.

Do you fix short cycling same day?

Most of the time, yes. Capacitors and contactors we fix on the spot. Refrigerant leak repair sometimes takes a return visit if a special part has to be ordered. Call (850) 235-8834.

Stop the cycling. Save the compressor.
